5 Skin Care Mistakes You Are Probably Makinggrace
From clearing acne, to correcting sun damage and dryness, clear, glowing, youthful skin starts with proper skin care habits. Taking a few minutes a day for smart skin care can prevent years worth of wrinkles, brown spots and more, So, whether your skin care routine is a homemade and natural approach, or the most elite skin care product line, DON’T fall into the trap of making these 5 skin Care Mistakes that can lead to major signs of skin aging.
1: I’m too tired to wash my face before bed Cleansing your skin for 3-5 minutes before bed allows the ingredients you pay for to work their magic. Cleanses skin helps ensure a fresh-faced look for years. A properly cleansed skin is needed to absorb skin nutrition products and allow your skin to breath and excrete naturally. ”Sleeping with dirt, oil, and makeup on causes acne and enlarged pores,” says Audrey Kunin, MD, an associate clinical instructor of dermatology at the University of Kansas School of Medicine.
2: SPF is for summer only Exposure to UVA rays, the primary culprit behind aging, happens all year long. … even on cloudy days or when you are walking to and from your car.
And because they can penetrate glass, you’re susceptible even when you’re indoors, says Fredric Brandt, MD, a New York- and Miami-based dermatologist. The number one way to guard against sun damage and keep skin looking youthful: use a sunscreen or moisturizer with SPF 50 that’s labeled broad-spectrum every day. For the best protection, choose one that contains either titanium dioxide, or zinc oxide.
Little known to the public is that when an SPF is included with your makeup or moisturizer the efficacy of the rating is diminished by 50%….so a SPF of 15 really protects you at a SPF of 7.5. Keep on top of your coverage and re-apply SPF as needed with your outdoor time.
Look for SPF’s with antioxidant and moisturizing ingredients. This gives you a double whammy of sun protection AND moisture /antioxidant support. SPF’s that have corrective serums in it, tend to not have a delivery system to transport the fancy ingredients to the skin cell, so the ingredients just stay on top of your dead skin layer without penetrating to the cells where it improves skin health. You should avoid SPF’s with retinols, AHA’s, peptides.
3: I’ve tried it all, and nothing works It can take at least 8 weeks to see the results of many ingredients, so give products time to deliver their benefits. If you are trying to correct skin aging and acne, you need this time for old skin cells to slough or and new regenerated cells to emerge.
Over the counter skin care products MUST be safe for anyone who purchases them. This means they are not as targeted and tailored for individual skin’s needs. IF you have a skin concern you want corrected, schedule a consultation with me (via Skype) or your local licensed esthetician for a professional skin care recommendations tailored for you and your lifestyle.,
Professional products ensure the greatest effectiveness. Ingredients in professional products have been chemically purified and have a delivery system to get the ingredients to your skin cells. Chemically purified ingredients tend to be combined with a scientific delivery system that gets the expensive ingredients you pay for to the cell where it does its magic.
Look for D and L before the ingredients like: l-ascorbic acid (not just vitamin c), l-sodium hylauronate (not just hylauronic acid), d-alpha tocopherol (not just vitamin E)
4: My skin is too sensitive for exfoliating Getting rid of dead cells helps soften wrinkles and brighten skin, but aggressive scrubs, retinols, retin-a, salicylic acids, AHA’s and skin brightening agents can lead to redness and irritation. This, however, does not mean a sensitive skin can not use them and gain their impressive benefits.
Scrubs are a great entry level way to exfoliate your skin. Avoid scrubs with an uneven texture, such as walnut shells. Jojoba beads in a scrub is very effective and does not scratch your skin. Exfoliate with a scrub just once or twice a week; or more if your skin tolerates it.
Incorporate a new regime of retin-a, retinols, scrubs, active acne products and skin brighteners slowly—start using these aggressive skin ingredients once or 2 twice a week. Expect your skin to become dry and flakey for about 2-3 weeks and then start to become luminous and fresh. But, if your skin becomes red and irritated, don’t give up on these corrective products, just back off the the frequency of application until your skin becomes accustomed to these very powerful anti-agers. “Your skin needs to build up a tolerance to aggressive anti-agers,” says Dr. Bank
As always, a licensed esthetician is trained to recommend products and treatments to exfoliate even the most sensitive skins. Schedule a virtual consultation with me, or find one in your area.
5: Products are too pricey Yes, you could save, by shopping at drugstores or department stores. But you could be wasting your time and money on products that don’t correct or prevent facial aging and acne issues. I firmly believe that if there is nothing wrong with your skin, go for it! … buy the inexpensive over the counter products.
But, if you are struggling with breakouts or acne, deep wrinkles, intense dryness or brown spots, it is possible to find affordable skin care products from your local esthetician.
“Look for active ingredients, not fancy labels,” says David E. Bank, MD, an associate professor of dermatology at Columbia University/Presbyterian Hospital.
The most effective over the counter anti-agers include retinoids (L-retinol), AHA’s like (L-lactic acid), peptides, vitamin C ( l-ascorbic acid) , and hydrators such as hyaluronic acid (l-sodium hylauronate)
To be effective on your skin, these must have ingredients should be listed in the top 10 ingredients. Again, be sure the ingredients have been chemically purified. Chemically purified ingredients tend to be combined with a scientific delivery system that gets the expensive ingredients you pay for to the cell where it does its magic. Look for D and L before the ingredients like: l-ascorbic acid (not just vitamin c), l-sodium hylauronite ( not just hylauronic acid)
